Elon Musk speaking about the upcoming Tesla Roadster prototype, hinting that the unveiling will be “unforgettable—whether it’s good or bad.”
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the long-delayed Roadster prototype will be showcased by the end of this year, promising an “unforgettable” reveal that could redefine the future of electric supercars.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again stirred excitement—and skepticism—after revealing that the long-delayed Tesla Roadster could include technology so advanced it may “challenge the definition of a car.” Following OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s public query about the Roadster’s delivery status, Musk responded by teasing a potential flying car in development.

Sam Altman’s Question Sparks Musk’s Bold Claim

The Tesla Roadster, first unveiled in 2017 with a promised 2020 launch, has yet to see the light of day. Even early buyers like Sam Altman—one of the car’s first pre-bookers—have expressed frustration over the years-long delay.

During an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Musk addressed these concerns, stating that Tesla is now “getting close” to demonstrating the prototype before the end of this year. He hinted that the event would be “unforgettable—whether it’s good or bad.”

Roadster’s ‘Crazy Technology’ and Flying Car Speculation

Musk described the second-generation Roadster as featuring “crazy technology”, adding, “Is it even a car? I’m not sure. It looks like a car, but it’s crazier than anything James Bond.”His remarks have reignited speculation that the upcoming Roadster could include VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) capabilities—essentially making it a short-range flying car.

While Musk avoided technical specifics, his statements align with his past interest in aerospace innovation through SpaceX, as well as Tesla’s experimentation with rocket thrusters and extreme aerodynamics.

The Dream of a Flying Car

The idea of a battery-powered VTOL vehicle has long fascinated the automotive and aviation industries. Multiple startups and automakers have explored flying taxi prototypes using electric propulsion systems. However, challenges such as safety regulations, battery density, and infrastructure continue to delay mass adoption.

Whether Tesla’s new Roadster will truly take flight remains uncertain, but Musk’s comments have renewed global attention on the long-awaited vehicle.

Musk’s Record of Ambitious Promises

Industry experts remain cautious about Musk’s timeline. The billionaire entrepreneur has a history of announcing futuristic projects years ahead of production—such as the Hyperloop, the Cybercab, and the Boring Company’s Las Vegas tunnel system, which currently operates at modest speeds with human-driven Teslas.

That said, Tesla has occasionally turned bold visions into reality. The Cybertruck, despite its multi-year delay, finally reached customers in late 2023, featuring a stainless-steel exoskeleton and steer-by-wire technology, setting a new benchmark in electric pickup innovation.

What’s Next for Tesla

If Musk’s latest comments hold true, Tesla could showcase the Roadster prototype by the end of 2025, potentially incorporating design or propulsion technologies never before seen in commercial vehicles.

Whether it turns out to be a revolutionary flying supercar or another futuristic prototype in progress, one thing is clear: Musk continues to push the boundaries of automotive imagination.
