A new partnership between Google DeepMind and the UK government aims to turn cutting-edge AI innovation into tangible benefits for citizens, the government announced today.

The alliance will focus on scientific breakthroughs, cleaner energy, and smarter public services, with the highlight being Google DeepMind’s first automated research lab in the UK, set to open next year. The lab will place British innovators at the heart of AI development, using advanced robotics and automation to accelerate research.

Lab Focus and Integration with Gemini

Built from the ground up, the lab will be fully integrated with Gemini AI and focus on developing next-generation superconductors capable of conducting electricity with zero resistance. These materials have the potential to revolutionize power grids, medical imaging, and high-performance computing.

The lab will also support AI-enabled research in fusion energy, aiming to deliver cheaper and greener energy for homes and businesses.

Access to Advanced AI Tools for UK Scientists

UK scientists will gain priority access to DeepMind’s AI models, including AlphaGenome for DNA sequencing and other tools for research in advanced materials and energy solutions.

DeepMind will also collaborate with the UK AI Security Institute to ensure AI development is safe, ethical, and beneficial to society.

Supporting UK Tech Infrastructure and Innovation

This partnership builds on Google’s commitment to the UK tech sector, including a £5 billion investment in AI infrastructure and efforts to modernize government IT systems.

Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, said:“AI has incredible potential to drive a new era of scientific discovery and improve everyday life. We’re excited to deepen our collaboration with the UK government to advance science, strengthen security, and deliver tangible benefits for citizens.”

Delivering Benefits for People and Public Services

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated:“This partnership ensures AI developments benefit everyone, from reducing energy bills with greener power to making public services more efficient and effective. This is national renewal in action, driving innovation to make our country stronger and fairer.”

Technology Secretary Liz Kendall added:“Google DeepMind exemplifies UK-US tech collaboration, supporting British innovators to shape the future of technology. Partnerships like this will help us go further, faster, and ensure science and technology drive national progress.”

The DeepMind automated lab represents a major step in embedding AI innovation into the UK’s scientific and public-service landscape, fostering research, security, and sustainable energy solutions for citizens.
